Also a US Romancart user. Regretting it a bit right now--RC quite unhelpful with transitioning. Problem is that, as a UK system, Romancart is not set up to interface with many US merchant services gateways. For example, they only offer one FirstData gateway(by far largest processor of cards in US) and there have been 4 new systems introduced now; I'm not sure Firstdata even supports LinkPoint anymore.

We recently had to change our Streamline terminal and noticed that their system no longer imprints the full number of the card on the retailers receipt - no doubt to stop dodgy retailers (and their staff) having potentially risky information.

Why haven't we heard of this before now? This is a very significant change. And PCI does allow for storage of credit card information. Large stores all over the world have been storing credit cards for decades. True, they must be PCI compliant, but they can store card information. Once you are PCI compliant, access to card data should be ok, as long as the whole system is PCI compliant. i.e Those stores accessing the data.

I find it hard to believe that there has been any PCI change. Had there been a change, we would have heard something and it would have been all over the internet. It was not.

The only reason that I can think of for this short notice change, is because RomanCart is storing the CVMs (Card Verification Methods) like CVV2, etc., and you got PCI dinged. Your certainly not the only one. PCI is like a fungus that sort of sneaks up on you and does not seem to want to stop growing.

You should still store the 1st 6 digits of the credit card which identifies the bank and consider storing it all, since we cannot verify with the bank without the entire number. Just get rid of the CMV data.

I would argue that this is NOT safer. It would mean that every single stolen card used to order online will be processed for the full amount. Sure we can reverse that, but that means we pay the excessive processing fees for processing the full amount and for refunding the full amount. With manual swipe we can hold up on processing certain high risk, high dollar and high theft items, until we do more checks, including contacting the customer personally.

Hi,

On 12th July 2013 the Manual Swipe payment method will no longer be available for either existing or new merchants.

All card transactions are subject to PCI security which are rules imposed on the card industry by Visa and Mastercard. These rules do not allow the storage of card details in this way.

There are a number of options on how you can continue to process card transactions when the Manual Swipe feature is no longer available.

1. You can switch to RomanCart payments. This is a built in payment gateway which has no extra monthly or annual fees. The only cost is a per transaction cost which is from 9p to 40p depending on how many you purchase. It is a pre-pay system. You need an Internet Merchant Account to use this system which can easily be obtained from your bank, or we can arrange one for you. See http://www.romancart.com/sell-more/tabs/rocpay.html for more information and to apply or call us on 01225588000

2. Use any of the other Payment Methods we support. These range from systems such as PayPal, where you do not need a merchant account to WorldPay/CardSave where they can set you up with the whole thing.

You will not find any other ecommerce systems which allow you to store the card details as was the case with Manual Swipe. If you do - then they will have to stop providing the service as soon as it comes to Visa's attention.

The other serious concern is that with a system like Manual Swipe, if card details were compromised and were used for fraud, Visa and Mastercard may hold you liable for all the costs of the fraud, including extra fines and administrative costs.

If you have any questions regarding this, please call us on 01225588000 and our team of friendly support people will be able to advise and assist.

Many Thanks
