top ten products sold - not of use

I would like to monitor the top products that I sell, but the list of the top ten sellers is not displaying what I want to see.

I sell items similar to the following situation: birthday cake (with name), wedding cake (with both names), retirement cake (with name). The name values are taken as modifiers (itemname2, etc) to the the product name (itemcode).

When I go to see the Top Ten Products Sold the list is similar to the following:
Rank   Quantity   Item Name
1       1       Birthday Cake (John Smith)
2       1       Retirement Cake (Joe Bloggs)
3       1       Wedding Cake (Joan & John)
4       1       Retirement Cake (Jane Doe)
5       1       Birthday Cake (Aunt Sally)
and so on....

I was hoping to see the total number of each type of cake. Where merchants have products with more that one modifier, is this Top Ten Listing of any use???

BTW, I dont actually sell cakes, but my products do have modifiers , sometimes five or six.

Is there any way that I can see the top selling items without the modifiers messing things up???
