Lost another regular customer yesterday in Canada. Her order was sent on the 18th July by Airmail and still not arrived, so as from today I am going to start using Airsure.

What I found is that when using Signed For, the postman has tried to deliver but no one in and taken it back to the postal delivery office, many times without leaving a card, so the customer doesn't even know that they have tried to deliver. With Airsure, they don't need a signature and it usually gets left, and as I said previously, it works like magic. Obviously there will be occasions that it goes astray but not very often.

I've had 3 parcels returned this last couple of weeks that were not signed for or collected at the destination. All 3 I've emailed several times saying the parcel has been returned, do they still want the goods and could they pay the postage for me to repost them. I've had no response whatsoever. Its hopeless.

My guess they are on holiday and expected the items to be stored indefinitely by Royal Mail. I had someone order an expensive watch strap at 2am and expected it to be delivered the same day in Bradford. When this didn't happen he wanted his money back as he was going on holiday!

I've had that people ordering at ungodly hours and then expecting it to be there for the morning. Doh....
Incidentally the parcels I'm talking about are international on the post above and one of them was from the beginning of June. Sure he can't have been on holiday for 2 months! |

Another annoying thing about RM's response to lost items is it allows itself 90 days to "investigate" lost Airsure items. Why this entire process can't be handled on-line as opposed to having send in detailed forms etc is beyond me in this day and age!

I have discovered this morning that if using MyHermes, DO NOT use through parcels2go as it is more expensive! The parcels2go website has been down for maintenance so I went direct to MyHermes and found it cheaper!!

I have always treated postal losses as the online equivalent of shrinkage. Put bluntly, opportunistic theft.
In my experience around one in 200 will 'not arrive'. My customers are mostly working/middle class women. A friend of mine has to allow for losses of around one in 50. He sells computer related spares. I have in the past regularly bid on items from lost-in-transit sales by RoyalMail, TNT, Business Post, UPS etc. Relative to the volume of items consigned, the percentages of items 'lost' (no address/no paperwork/unable to deliver or return) are truly tiny. People will always steal. Allow 1-2% for it, dependent upon your industry, and move on. |
