Hi Support,

My courier company TNT has just decided to separate Northern Ireland and the Highlands, Channel & Offshore Islands away from the UK. Could you please add these areas to your shipping countries so I can create shipping prices for them?

Hi,

You should use postcode shipping for this. Find out which postcodes TNT consider in the Highlands and create a specific shipping method for these areas.

See here for more info...

Sorry James, thats not going to work. I have just set it up and when a customer from NI looks at countries they are going to click UK and NI is part of the UK. I then went through and put one of the BT post codes in for the address and it carried on charging me a UK mainland postal fee.

Hi,
With Postcode based shipping the shipping method offered to the customer is based on the country and postcode they enter.
Therefore, create a 'Northern Ireland' shipping method, which accounts for Northern Irish Postcodes in the UK. Create a Highlands one for the UK with UK Highland prices and then assign a UK Mainland or similar to the remaining postcodes. 'All other Postcodes not already allocated'.

Channel islands are easier as they have their own country codes so you can create any shipping method you like for those and allocate to those countries.

Many Thanks

I'm also struggling with intergrating NI and Scottish shipping methods. I can either force the customer to enter their postcode before they do anything else (which is putting people off as they get assaulted with the (horrible and uneditable) region page as soon as they click "Add to Basket" for the first time) OR I rely on customers clicking "Change" on the Basket page which no-one does as it states Your Location : United Kingdom, which they are!

I desparately want to incorporate the Region "enter your postcode" page INTO the basket page somehow. There has to be a better way of handling regional postcode entry in an end user friendly way.

Hi,
Normally you would default the region screen to a region, so that the customer doesn't not see it at all unless they want to change the region. e.g. UK Mainland.

It all really depends though on how you are charging shipping. If your shipping company is using Postcodes to work out the price then this is what you should ideally do on your website.

Yes we're using post codes to work out shipping prices. The trouble comes in that there is no nice, customer friendly way include compulsorary postcode entry nor to encourage customers to enter their postcode to double check shipping.

And to be honest 90% of the time it's not an issue. Only Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland etc. are the awkward ones. But unless the customer chooses to click "change" and enter their postcode at the Basket screen (and like I said they don't because they ARE in the the UK) the shipping options that are postcode specific simply don't show (and the standard ones which DON'T apply to those postcodes do!). Once shipping is carried through to checkout it doesn't change, regardless of what postcode is entered there.
