Subject: Newbie; How to test the checkout page

Hi,

I am new to Roman Cart, so please go easy on me :-)

I have nearly finished my web site, which will only be using Paypal for payments (for the moment anyway), and read somewhere that people often do not realise that they can pay with paypal using a credit/debit card without having to register with Paypal, because Paypal don't make this facility obvious within it's checkout system. Therefore, I wanted to have a "I'll show you how" page to explain how Paypal works so there is no confusion on how to pay. However, I do not know how to test the checkout system on a non-live web site, as I wanted to see all the payment processes, so I can describe the procedure properly, and if possible have small screenshots as well. Can anyone explain if it is possible to fully test the cart & checkout system using Paypal and go through until just before payment, so I can give the customer this information.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Just click your Paypal button in your cart and then don't complete. Your sale will just come up as "not completed" on the cart.

Having said that most people know how to use Paypal these days. It seems to me very few don't have an account with them so personally I wouldn't waste your time doing a step by step on how to use Paypal. We've been running 5 years plus and never had any issues with it with regards to people paying.

Thank you very much for writing back.

I read on a forum a few days ago (I think it was the paypal business help forum), that some have been contacted by prospective customers who could not figure out how to pay using a credit card, as they do not have a paypal account. The poster explained that when going through the checkout system, you can pay without having a paypal account, but it is not clear to the customer.

I do agree that many people have paypal account these days, but since my prospective audience are from a wide range of age groups (audio enthusiasts), then many might not have such accounts, but everyone uses credit cards. This is why I was going to have a tutorial.

Thanks.

Enter the code on the link above as appropriate into your web site where you want the view cart to be. They can view the total on your web page or click on to view the cart.

You can see the view basket top right column on my web page - http://www.facepaintsdirect.co.uk/index.htm

Re Paypal I do think they are crafty in the way they apply their page as it does make it look like you need an account, but many, many people know how to use it these days. You can always add a line of text to the checkout pages saying "it is not necessary to have a Paypal account etc etc..."

Also, there is a point when you have to stop spoon feeding customers as if you get very busy it can take up all your time. They do have to think for themselves and take some responsibility at some point.

Thank you very much for your help; It's very much appreciated. Also, your advice is very much welcome, and I will certainly have a good think about whether it is worth the time to make the "how to" page. Since you have explained I can add text to the cart on checkout, I think this would actually be better.
Thanks.

Good luck with it, but ultimately, don't make work that is unnecessary.

You can always change and adapt down the line should you need to, but I'm pretty sure you won't have any major issues.

Thanks again for your help.

I could not figure out how to implement having alternate text in the cart, but have set up paypal to work following the procedure set out on the Roman cart web site, so now I can go through the checkout procedure. I have just put a note on my web site to click on the "Don't have a paypal account" link in the checkout page.

Could you help me again ?

The site is basically finished (except for formatting the pages to be neater), and what I wanted to do was make the "continue shopping" button take the customer back to the page they were on last. Since I haven't uploaded it yet, can this be set in the basket preferences. It only gives a setting to input a url which obviously, I do not have yet.

In the site builder I am using (web builder 8), I can make a button with the attribute to "go to the previous page". This is what I would like to do for the "continue shopping" button in the cart.

Is it possible ?

Thank you.

Go to tools, Options, Basket and tick the Automatic Continue Shopping URL : wich will get the button to take you back to the page you were on.

Thank you for writing back.

I had already done this, but without a url in the box below that setting, the "continue shopping" button does nothing. Since the web site is only on my computer at present, is there anything I can put into the url box to make it come back to the previous page ?

Are you in essence saying that when it is live, that I should leave the url box blank to have it return to the previous page ?

Thanks.

Hi

If the site is currently beening hosted on your own desk top PC then the RC automatic continue shopping will not be reliable, this is due to how the internet works, however when you publish your site on your hosting providers servers the RC Automatic Continue Shopping will work fine.

If I remmember correctly if you tick Automatic Continue Shopping RC will return the customer to the page where they clicked the add to cart button, regardless of what you enter in the URL text box.

However if for any reason RC can't work out what the Automatic Continue Shopping URL is then whatever you have put in the URL text box will be used, if you leave URL text box empty then I belive the customer will be returned to an RC page in the event of a Automatic Continue Shopping URL problem.

Thank you very much for letting me know. I'll just have to wait until it's live to see it work.

Thanks again.
