I think that is going to kill our business as most of our parcels are between 0-500 g. Coupled with having to charge VAT on there as we charge for packaging its going to create a hefty price rise for customers ordering only one or two items.

Same here. What really annoys me at the moment is the fact that they can do and charge whatever they wish and we, the poor public, have no alternative but to accept it.

What annoys me is the service is so rubbish. The amount of parcels that go missing etc and then they have the cheek to raise the price, but can't provide the service. I hate rotten mail.
Has anyone any suggestions now for alternatives as couriers are looking more favourable by the minute. |

Whilst I don't like price rises, perhaps it's time people realised that Royal Mail is a business not a charity. It's supposed to make a profit, just as our businesses try to. If you want it to be a public service instead of a private business, the people to complain to are you MPs, not Royal Mail. Whilst your at it, see if you can get them to sort out the health service and transport system as well, they used to be public services if I remember correctly
No-one seems to have a realistic alternative to Royal Mail, although our experience with them is good. We lose only a handful of parcels every year, and most of those are down customers who don't know where they live , so I'm still OK with the service we get. In total, they have around 97% success rate (I think?), it'd be interesing to see what some of the alternative companies achieve. We use a courier for heavy items and they also do pickups for us, we have more lost parcels with them than we ever do with Royal Mail. Each to their own. Don't get me started, I've still go that soapbox around here somewhere

I think all things like electricity, gas, water, etc should be public services. If they were they wouldn't put shareholders and profits above supply which especially with water is a necessity to live.
Anyhow, our experience of rotten mail is not good. I've had lost parcels which have cost me customers and business, parcels delivered back to me next day instead of the recipient and all sorts of things. List is too long to mention. At one point this was almost on a weekly basis, although has improved recently. Unfortunately, have been stuck with them as cheapest option for things. I realise they are a business and need to make money, as we all do, but if you want to put the price up have the service to back it up. I resent paying higher prices for what for us is not a particularly good service. Not only that our personal post is not delivered until sometimes nearly 4.00 pm which years ago it was delivered well before lunch time and I fail to see why they can't manage it now. I might go down the franking machine route as it might work out better for my customers, although added costs for us in some respects. |

Just read this on the BBC news page:
Shortly after the announcement from Ofcom, Royal Mail announced exactly how much it will charge for stamps from 30 April. It announced: The price of a first-class stamp for a standard letter will go up from 46p to 60p on 30 April A second-class stamp for a standard letter will go up from 36p to 50p on the same date A first-class stamp for a large letter weighing up to 100g will rise from 75p to 90p A large letter sent second-class will cost 69p, rather than 58p Parcels, franked mail, recorded post, redirection services and PO Box use will also be going up in price "We know how hard it is for households and businesses when our economy is as tough as it is now. No-one likes to raise prices in the current economic climate but, regretfully, we have no option," said Moya Greene, chief executive of Royal Mail. "Royal Mail provides one of the highest quality postal services in Europe for among the lowest prices for both consumers and business." |

If they are one of the best in Europe, I pity the rest of Europe! Their service is apalling.

In the longer term what is happening is that RM is being fattened up for privatisaition along the lines of John Lewis in 2014. 90% to DHL, or someone like them, and 10% to RM employees. The problem for internet retailers is that there simply isn't a cost-effective alternative to RM for small low-weight, low-value parcels. I have DHL consumer tariff in front of me and they want to charge £5.95 for UK 1 - 2 working days delivery up to 20gms!

I wouldn't disagree with that, but we're a long way from it and getting further. That's the nature of the free market, level playing field (insert own preferred bollocks economic term here) or whatever you want to call it. We just have to live and work with it... We moved to packet post and daily collection 18 months ago and it works well for us and saved us money. |

Packet post service - have you a link as see whether its more worth our while. Other option is franking now to keep costs down to our customers.
